Welcome to Pupmeister

I’m a dog trainer specialising in 1-to-1 training for puppies and adolescent dogs across Brighton, Hove, and nearby areas, with remote coaching wherever you are. I work with dogs from 8 weeks to around 18 months — the stage when they’re learning fastest and when the right training has the greatest long-term impact.

Foundation Training builds skills and confidence that last, setting your dog up for life. As they grow, focus can waver and behaviour can shift — a normal part of development that often takes owners by surprise. Reset Training helps at that stage, reinforcing what your dog already knows and guiding you both through the tearaway teen phase with calm, practical support

Puppy Foundations

Puppyhood is when everything takes shape — confidence, curiosity, and how your dog responds to the world.

Foundation Training builds lasting skills and calm confidence from the start, with coaching tailored to your dog’s breed, temperament, and routine. It’s about creating foundations for real life, not chasing the dream of a “perfect puppy.”

Teen Resets

Adolescence can feel like your dog’s forgotten everything they ever learned — but it’s all still there, just buried under a hormonal tidal wave!

Reset Training helps you reconnect, reinforce key skills, and rebuild focus with patience and play. It’s about guiding your teen through the chaos calmly, so those early foundations become lifelong habits.

How I train

‘Training for a happy life’ means three things: using reward-based methods rooted in behavioural science, breed-savvy training that works with your dog's natural instincts, and making play central to how your dog learns. The goal isn't just obedience - it's about building a bond that's rewarding for you both for life.

Positive, Science-Based Dog Training Approach

Proven methods

I use reward-based training - the approach recognised as best practice in modern dog training and recommended by clinical animal behaviourists. It works because it's based on how dogs actually learn.

When you make the right choices rewarding, dogs learn to think and problem-solve rather than just follow commands. This creates confident dogs who genuinely want to cooperate - and that's a foundation that lasts for life.

Breed-savvy

Different breeds were developed for different jobs, and those instincts don't disappear just because your dog is now a pet. A terrier's drive to chase, a spaniel's need for closeness, a collie's problem-solving nature - these are hardwired.

Training that works with your dog's breed instincts is faster, less frustrating, and makes sense to them. It's about understanding what motivates your dog naturally and using that to build the behaviours you want.

Playful learning

Play isn't just downtime - it's one of the most effective ways dogs learn. When training feels like a game, dogs stay engaged, retain more, and are genuinely motivated to participate. It makes the learning process rewarding in itself.

This approach builds dogs who actually enjoy training and look forward to working with you. The bond you create is stronger because it's built on mutual enjoyment, not just compliance.

“From the very beginning it was clear that training was going to be thoughtful, fun and extremely positive. My pups picked up commands much faster than I ever expected, and we also noticed huge improvements in their confidence and general behaviour at home”

How I Got Here

I’ve been a portrait photographer for many years, and it’s still something I love doing. But as anyone who’s lived with a dog knows, they have a way of changing how you see the world — and my own experiences sparked a real fascination with canine psychology and behaviour.

I decided to dive deeper and chose to study with PACT, a highly respected organisation in reward-based dog training, because of the depth and rigour of their course, their standing in the industry, and their strong focus on behavioural science, welfare, and ethical practice.

Now I split my time between photographing people, training dogs across Brighton & Hove, and trying to get the best out of both of them!

(Actually, I now photograph dogs too - but more of that below)

Pupmeister portraits

As a studio photographer, that felt like the obvious place to start — a chance to create fine-art dog portraits that capture something of the spirit that makes each dog unique.

But over time I realised not every dog shows their true self under studio lights. Some come alive outdoors, so I now offer outdoor dog photography sessions in environments that suit their nature — from the Spaniel that lives for crashing through the undergrowth to the Staffie that turns blissfully still the moment it finds that perfect patch of sun to stretch out in.

Now I do both, and deliver portraits as fine art prints, mounted frames, or bespoke pieces on metal, acrylic, and other materials — made to be lived with, not just looked at.

A bit like your dog.

Survival guides to keep you sane

Whether you're in early puppy chaos or teenage rebellion, you need different strategies for different phases.

The Puppy Primer (0-6 months) covers the eight things that trip most people up in the early months: sleep, house training, crate training, biting, the puppy blues, zoomies, jumping up, and filtering out bad advice. It's a practical guide to coping with the chaos and understanding what's actually normal.

Terrible Teens (6-18 months) tackles the phase where everything falls apart. Between 6 and 18 months, your dog's brain is essentially rewiring—which is why skills you thought were nailed suddenly aren't. This guide covers why recall fails when it matters, how to prevent lead pulling from becoming a habit, what to do when your dog tests every boundary, and how to manage that adolescent energy without making things worse.

Both are frank, evidence-based guides written for people who need actual help—not Instagram perfection. Pick whichever phase you're drowning in now.

How NOT To Train the Perfect Pup book cover showing dog head with anatomical brain illustration labeled with training concepts by Pupmeister

Your puppy isn't the problem. They're already perfect at being a dog. The problem? We keep misdiagnosing what we see.

This book isn't another generic puppy training manual promising Instagram-ready results in six weeks. It's an evidence-based guide that challenges the myths that make puppy raising harder than it needs to be—from outdated dominance theory to the human characteristics we project onto dogs who are simply being dogs.

Drawing on behavioral science, breed-specific understanding, and positive reinforcement methods, How (NOT) to Train the Perfect Pup helps you understand your puppy on their terms, not yours. You'll learn why your eager puppy suddenly "forgets" everything at six months, why corrections damage trust, and how genetics shape behavior in ways no amount of training can override.

Written by Brighton-based David Green, puppy and teen dog trainer and founder of Pupmeister. No jargon. No perfectionism. Just honest, practical help for raising the dog you actually have.
